In Macross the movie, remember the orange veritech that Hikaru and Minmay flew around the rings of Saturn?

This is the VT-1 “Super Ostrich”. Yamato originally released a replica in 2003, but recently re-released it.

The Box
The height of the box is the same as that of the VF-1A and VF-1J Mass Production TV Types.

The inner cover is quite colorful, showing all the modes of the VT-1. The toy itself is sandwiched between top and bottom plastic trays.

The toy comes with an instruction manual and a sheet of stickers.

See that part in the upper left-hand corner with the circle? That’s the head! At the bottom of the plastic tray, we see Hikaru and Minmay action figures.
The Action Figures
The Hikaru and Minmay action figures both have their helmets on.

I would’ve liked to see the Minmay figure with her helmet off, since in most of the relevant movie scenes, Minmay is not wearing her helmet.

Fighter Mode
Fighter mode looks great from the front and the back.

Peculiarities
Besides the head, the VT-1 has some peculiarities. For example, the fins on the backpack do not fold together, but they fold together on the VF-1J/1A/1S.

This is intentional; it’s true to the line art.

Another difference between the VT-1 and the VF-1J/1A/1S is that the wingtips have two “lights” instead of just one.

Shortcuts
Yamato took some shortcuts manufacturing the VT-1. For example, the instruction manual shows an unpainted VT-1.

Finally, although the “big hands” are included with the toy, the right hand that normally holds the gun pod is the same as you’ll find with the Hikaru’s VF-1S, but there’s no gunpod included with the toy.
More to come later!
